Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

LANGTON'S AUCTIONS

About Langton's

Stewart Langton established Langton's Fine Wine Auctions, the first and only specialist wine auction house in Australia, in Melbourne in 1988. In 1989 Andrew Caillard joined Langton's, establishing auction rooms in Sydney to reach a small but growing national secondary market. In 1990, Langton's formed a unique association with Christie's Australia, consolidating its position as an emerging force in Australian wine auctions. In 1991 Langton's released its first Classification of Distinguished Australian Wine, the first credible form guide of fine Australian wine. This was followed up by a re-classification in 1996. In 1991 and 1993 Langton's published its own secondary market price guide. After almost five years Langton's Australian Fine Wine Investment Guide was published in 1997 to try and make sense of the growing interest in ultra fine Australian wine (5000 copies sold). A follow-up publication will be released in early November.

Langton's analysis of the 2000 season

Following the bull market of 1999, we were very pleased not to suffer a hangover in 2000 as the market continued to trade at high levels - reflecting the current strength and depth of the market. Although 2000 was strong, with an increase in volume sold compared to 1999, prices were not as strong. Read more about the season with Tamara Grischy's informed analysis.

Our feature article from Langton's

Our man from Langton's, Andrew Caillard MW, writes an irregular feature column for the site. In this feature, he looks first at the rationale behind the initial release of Langton's Classification of Australian Wine in 1991, followed by the market changes that have affected the 1996 and now the 2000 classifications.
