Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

The 2003 Len Evans Tutorial

    Jul 11 2003 | Author: Winepros

© Winepros

It has been called 'the most exclusive wine school in the world', and its scholars have graced judging benches across the country in the three years since inception. Applications are now being accepted for the third annual Len Evans Tutorial to be held November 3-7 at Tower Lodge in the Hunter Valley.

The program is designed to define the demands of show judging and expose scholars to the great wine styles of the world. Every scholar walks away with a new perspective on how wines are assessed, based on tastings of more than 400 of the world's most revered wines.

The success of the tutorial is measured in the achievements of its Scholars. Some 80% of the 25 past scholars have adjudicated at major wine shows since completing the Tutorial.

The program is made up of three hour morning judging and discussion sessions, with masterclasses in the afternoon, followed by dinner with blind tastings and more discussion.

Twelve fully paid scholarships are being offered, with wine, food and accommodation valued at over $6500 each - a significant rise on previous years. The addition of new sponsors not only allows for an increase in the number of wines served, but more importantly accommodates the ever-increasing price of the world's great wines.

Tutors for this year's Tutorial include Len Evans, James Halliday, Ian Mackenzie, Brian Croser, Gary Steel and Iain Riggs.

Candidates for the Len Evans Scholarship need to send in their CVs with an outline of their reasons for wanting to be a part of the program. Relevant references must also be included. These applications will then be put to a panel. The closing date is September 10, 2003.

The Dux of the tutorial will be awarded the Len Evans Scholarship, consisting of an overseas air fare and a position at a capital city Australian wine show.

Applications should be sent to:

The Len Evans Tutorial, 151 Palmers Lane, Pokolbin, NSW, 2320

Email applications will be accepted.
