Regional Overview
Visiting Australia? Discover our main wine states and regions
Australian wine regions
Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Angela Lloyd | |
| |
Born in Berkshire, England, Angela Lloyd initially pursued a career in Speech and Drama. However, shortly after arriving in the Cape in 1970, Angela was introduced to wine by Mark Lloyd, who subsequently became her husband. It was an introduction that grew from being the first female member of the Wine Tasters' Guild of South Africa in 1976 to running the Cape Wine Centre for two years, before leaving at the end of 1985 to become a professional wine writer. Angela has been a regular contributor and wine columnist for several South African newspapers including the Financial Mail, as well as a radio broadcaster, a lecturer and a wine judge for the South African/Australian (SAA) Shield in 1995, and the SAA Wine List Awards since 1997. She was also the Editor (South Africa) of Oz Clarke's Encyclopaedia of Wine. Currently, Angela is keeping herself more than busy as Editor of the South African section of Oz Clarke's Pocket Wine Guide and CD-ROM, Associate Editor for Grape, South Africa's independent wine viewpoint, and as the South African contributor to www.WineToday.com. She has been contributing to the John Platter Wine Guide since 1987 (almost longer than the author himself!), and is also a member of both the Wine Tasters' Guild of South Africa and the International Wine & Food Society. In what spare time she has in between her numerous wine-related activities, Angela enjoys music, singing and theatre, as well as looking after two boisterous Labradors, Pinot Noir and Champagne Charlie. |
