Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Gerry Taggert

Gerry Taggert

Gerry stumbled (almost literally) into the wine industry just a wee bit over twenty years ago and has subsequently gained extensive wine retailing and on-premise experience in hotel management and the wine trade. For his sins he has worked in wholesale distribution with a major South Australian company, and subsequently with one of Australia's pre-eminent independent wine distributors as marketing manager. As such he has been associated with some of the most cutting edge wineries and concepts in the New World.

He was a founding partner in the successful marketing consultancy Flying Wine Marketers in 1995, which also saw the birth of Celtic Farm wines, of which he is also a passionate (some would say lunatic) partner, playing the role of Executive Winemaker. His CV reads like a dream job, with either a glass or fork rarely far out of reach. Tough task, but Gerry is your man; always committed to the job at hand.

He has regularly lectured at TAFE on Wine Studies, was the Geelong Advertiser's wine columnist for 8 years, worked in radio, and continues to write freelance on wine and industry-related issues. In his spare time he travels across this wide brown land fishing the major waterways in search of the elusive Big One. Current score: Marlin - home free, Taggert - nil.
