Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Principal Wine Styles

Shiraz
The sheer dominance of the plantings tells part, but not all, of the story. The style of Shiraz varies significantly across the length and breadth of Australia, and it would be foolish to suggest that any one style is better than all others. But few would argue with the proposition that the conjunction of climate and soil here produces world-class Shiraz with unique character. It is deep, rich and velvety, with cascades of dark cherry plum and sweetly spicy fruit, with ripe but fine tannins giving texture and sustaining length. It is hardly necessary to add that such wines age superbly; indeed, the end point is yet to be determined given that most of the wineries date from the mid 1970s. Jasper Hill stands in an opulent class all of its own, but Wild Duck Creek has attracted extravagant praise from the USA for such tasty offerings as Duck Muck. At a more mundane level, Heathcote Winery, Mount Ida and Paul Osicka all produce Shiraz of the utmost quality.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Joins arms with Shiraz in proving - if proof be needed - that this is first and last red wind country. Once again, the style is rich and generous, the berry flavours without any hint of herbaceousness, although some of the Central Victorian eucalypt-mint character can make its presence felt in some vintages. Merlot, the third most important variety, is very much a hand-maiden to Cabernet Sauvignon, rather than a varietal in its own right. Huntleigh Estate is one to watch out for, with older wines available.
