Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Winepros' Notes

Wine background
The strikingly labelled and named Madfish was designed by Maxine Fumagalli, a Noongar artist who lives in Denmark, Western Australia. The name itself comes from a favourite fishing spot 15 kilometres west of Denmark. The white is an unwooded blend of predominantly Chardonnay, and small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and (in some years) Semillon from the Great Southern region.

James Halliday Oct 08 2002 Rating: 91 out of 100

Bright, light yellow-green; an aromatic bouquet with some grapefruit and citrus, the palate quite intense, with good length and a pleasingly dry finish avoiding phenolics. In fact, 100 per cent unwooded chardonnay, and a particularly fine example.

James Halliday Jan 30 2003 Rating: 85 out of 100

Medium red-purple; spicy fruit plus lots of oak (a mix of French and American) comes through on the bouquet; the palate is quite tangy with savoury/leafy/lemony varietal characters and fine tannins; overall it is slightly green.
