Australian wine regions
Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Wine background
The wine which propelled St Hallett into national and international demand. The vast majority of the vineyard blocks involved have old, dry-grown vines, but in the manner of Grange, the individual contributions vary from one year to the next. Both Eden Valley grapes (around 20 per cent) and Barossa Valley grapes (around 80 per cent) are typically used. The wine is matured in a mix of new to three-year-old American oak barrels for 24 to 28 months prior to bottling. | |
| James Halliday Oct 01 1995 Rating: 94 out of 100 | Medium to full red-purple; fragrant, spicy varietal fruit with an abundant sweet cherry core and a hint of vanillin/coconut oak. The palate shows lovely cherry fruit with a hint of liquorice, and more spice than in either the '91 or '90 vintages. Retasted twice in October 1995, with consistently very high points; the spice has subsided, and in its place dark berry/blackberry fruits and elegant, fine-grained tannins have come to the fore. A beautiful wine. |
