Australian wine regions
Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Summary:
Long-term Wyndham Estate winemaker John Baruzzi has formed a 50-50 joint venture with Joe Lesnik, resulting in the former Lesnik Family Winery now renamed Wilderness Estate. The Lesnik label will be phased out, with all wines from the '95 vintage being released either under the Wilderness Estate label or under the Black Creek label. National distribution through Normans is supplemented by exports to the US, Canada and the UK. As this book was going to print Wilderness Estate was being offered for sale by auction. |

The premium varietal range of Unwooded Semillon, Individual Block Semillon, Unwooded Chardonnay, Reserve Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Merlot and Merlot is under the Wilderness Estate label; the second Black Creek label encompasses a range of lower-priced varietals with Traminer Riesling, Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Sparkling Brut, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. |
