Australian wine regions
Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Since the 1992 merger of Thomas Hardy and the Berri Renmano group, the business has flourished, and the shareholders have profited greatly. The merged group has confounded expectations by aggressively, and very successfully, pushing the premium end of the business, making a number of acquisitions and investments across the length and breadth of Australia, all aimed at the upper end of the market. A high level of winemaking expertise and commitment has been an essential part of this success. It is basically for these wines that the winery rating is given.
At the bottom comes the R&R range of Riesling Traminer, Colombard Chardonnay, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Classic Cuvee; then Nottage Hill Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz; Siegersdorf Riesling and Chardonnay; No Preservative Added range of Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon; Insigia Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz; Tintara Cellars Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon; Sir James sparkling; super-premium Tintara Grenache and Shiraz, Eileen Hardy Chardonnay, Shiraz and Thomas Hardy Cabernet Sauvignon, Arras Pinot Noir Chardonnay; also superior-quality Brandies and Ports including Australia's finest Vintage Port.
