Regional Overview
Visiting Australia? Discover our main wine states and regions
Australian wine regions
Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Summary: All of the literature and promotional material emphasises the fact that Oakvale has been family-owned since 1893. What it does not mention is that three quite unrelated families have been the owners: first, and for much of the time, the Elliott family; then former Sydney solicitor Barry Shields; and, since 1999, Richard and Mary Owens, who also own the separately-run Milbrovale winery at Broke. Be that as it may, the Oakvale winery, the original slab hut homestead of the Elliott family which is now a museum, and the atmospheric Oakvale winery are in the 'must visit' category. The winery complex offers a delicatessen, espresso coffee shop, a book shop and has picnic and playground facilities. Live entertainment each weekend between 11 am and 3 pm. |

Product Range: There are three ranges: Oakvale Classic, Peach Tree Reserve and Peppercorn Reserve; also Milbrovale Owens Family. |
