Australian wine regions

Australia is a large country - Margaret River is further from the Hunter Valley than Jerez in Spain is from Tokaji in Hungary - so, despite the distinctive national approach to wine, Australian wines are not all the same. The wines of Margaret River and of the Hunter Valley differ as much as sherry and tokay do. The three most important wine-producing states are South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as bulk production, they each have specific premium wine regions.

Rothbury Estate

Rating:

Established: 1968

Region: Australia - NSW - Lower Hunter Valley

Winemaker: Neil McGuigan

Production Quantity: NFP

Winery Highlights:
For updated information on this winery, please visit http://www.visitvineyards.com/vv/index.jsp?product_id=5011120

Address: Broke Road, Pokolbin, NSW 2321

Ph: (02) 4998 7363

Fax: (02) 4993 3559

Summary:
Rothbury celebrated its 30th birthday in 1998, albeit not quite in the fashion that founder and previous chief executive Len Evans would have wished. After a protracted and at times bitter takeover battle, it became part of the Beringer Blass empire. It remains to be seen what impact the surprise retention of Neil McGuigan as winemaker will have; one would expect a significant lift in quality.

Product Range:
At the top comes the Individual Vineyard range of Hunter Valley Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz; next the Hunter Valley range of varietals; and finally varietals from Mudgee and Cowra.

Price Range: 9.00 - 22.00 Retail
